Founding of the Club
Mistley Rugby Club was established in 1983, in an unconventional setting—the back of a carpet van during a return journey from Brentwood Rugby Club. The founders, Rodney Baxter and Geoff Reid, were instrumental in bringing the club to life. Geoff Reid, who was the landlord of The Blacksmith's Arms at Mistley Heath, was appointed as the club’s President due to his exceptional fundraising abilities. The snug of the Blacksmith's Arms soon became the headquarters for Mistley RUFC.
In the early days, Rodney Baxter and Natalie Tweddle, who served as Club Secretary, worked together to register the club with the Suffolk RFU, starting with just a single player. Roger Wright, previously of Colchester RUFC, joined as the backs coach, while Rodney Baxter took charge of the forwards. Marie Reid, Geoff’s widow, continues to serve as Honorary Life President. In the club’s formative years, she was known for her dedicated support, providing meals, chief cook and bottle washer, feeding and taking care of the players after each match.
Early Years and Facilities Development
The club’s first matches took place at Manningtree School, but it was not long before a more suitable space was found in the field next to the current facilities. A portacabin was initially used as changing rooms, and post-match social gatherings were held at the old Thorn Hotel. In 1987, the club acquired a demountable classroom from what would become the Sixth Form College in Colchester. Unfortunately, while reconstructing it on site, the devastating gale of October 1987 caused the structure to collapse. Undeterred, members rebuilt it, creating a large changing room with showers and a social area.
Two years later, this building was relocated over the hedge to its current position on Parish Council land, and the social area was enhanced with a licensed bar and kitchen. By the end of the 1990s, new health and safety regulations meant that the facilities no longer met requirements for bars and kitchens, so the club’s social gatherings moved to The Anchor Inn in Mistley.
In 1995, the club decided to refurbish the clubhouse. The following year, members modified the building to its current double changing room layout, with much of the work carried out by club members themselves.
Community and Club Growth
Mistley Rugby Club’s survival and growth throughout the years have depended upon the invaluable support of those who contributed their time, expertise, money, and materials, both on and off the pitch. The club extends heartfelt thanks to everyone involved. Built on camaraderie and a passion for rugby, Mistley has flourished into a vibrant hub for the local rugby community. The youth section is now the largest and most dynamic part of the club, boasting multiple thriving teams that nurture children from their first steps on the pitch through to young adulthood. Complementing this, the club’s two Men’s Senior teams and a recently established Women’s team not only provide competitive rugby, but also serve as role models and mentors for younger players. The club is run entirely by a committed group of volunteers whose dedication ensures the smooth running of coaching and events. Their tireless work forms the backbone of Mistley RUFC, fostering an inclusive, welcoming, and ambitious environment for all.
Role in the Local Community
Mistley Rugby Club is more than just a sporting organisation—it stands as a proud pillar of the local community. The club hosts a variety of events throughout the year to bring people together, such as the much-loved Mistley Pram Race, which is a cherished tradition that attracts crowds and raises essential funds in a fun, family-friendly atmosphere. Other events, including summer festivals, family games nights, and charity fundraisers, fill the club’s calendar with opportunities for everyone to participate.
These activities highlight Mistley Rugby Club’s commitment to creating a friendly environment where sport, friendship, and community spirit flourish side by side.
