Mistley reclaim the Thorn Cup!!

The traditional Boxing Day clash between Mistley and Harwich, now it’s in 40th year, delivered another classic with a 21-12 win for the hosts.

Fittingly for its 40th anniversary, this year’s Thorn Cup saw the largest crowd in living memory gather at Mistley’s Furze Hill home, with both sides well supported, to watch a thrilling match that saw Mistley reclaim the cup.

The first half was a close and hard-fought affair with a single try for Mistley being the difference when gentlemen broke for port at half time.

Despite the low score both sides were defying the excesses of Christmas and playing rock and roll rugby, keeping the crowd thoroughly entertained whilst the hard-working bar staff ensured everyone was well hydrated.

In the second half the hosts started to exert more dominance in both possession and territory which eventually paid off in two converted tries in quick succession.

Harwich, as holders, were in no mode to let the Cup go lightly and mounted a thrilling fightback that saw them cross the whitewash twice and cause a few nerves in the vocal home support. However, some good game management saw out the clock and Mistley claimed a famous victory.
